DragonSword Awakening Beginner Guide: First Hours in Orbis

Combat is a relay, not a duel. DragonSword: Awakening looks like a standard anime action RPG where you pick a favourite character and mash. It is not. Heroes weave in and out of battle through Switching Signals, and your damage comes from stacking Status Ailments with one Hero so another can detonate them. Play it as a single character and you will feel like you are doing a fraction of the damage you should be — because you are.

The setup

You play Lute, a young boy travelling toward Orbis, the first kingdom built by humankind. He gets caught up in the lives of Johnny, a mercenary, and Castella, an Elf, and stumbles into mercenary life. A shadow spreads over the continent, and the question the story asks is whether Lute becomes the Dragon Sword — the hero destined to save Orbis.

The world is an anime-styled open world built in Unreal Engine 5: meadows, cellars under watchtowers, deep seas, hidden caves and dungeons, all explorable on foot.

The three systems to learn first

1. Status Ailments. Each of the 19 Heroes has distinct Status Ailment abilities. This is the axis your team is built on.

2. Signal Skills. You stack ailments with Active Skills, then chain devastating combos with Signal Skills. Ailments are the setup; Signals are the payoff.

3. Switching Signals. Heroes rotate in and out in endless combo chains. Building a team is about which ailments feed which Signals, not about picking three characters you like.

Beyond combat

Two systems are easy to dismiss and should not be:

• Familiars — collectible companions that aid you on your journey.
• Cooking — combine ingredients found across the continent to create new dishes. Community cooking guides appeared within days of launch, which tells you it matters.

You also solve problems for local residents, which is how you become a real member of Orbis rather than a tourist.

Before you install

Check one thing: an SSD is strictly required. The store page is explicit that installing on an HDD may cause extended loading times, texture pop-in, framerate drops or unexpected behaviour. The install is 25 GB. See system requirements for the full spec.
